Confirm Your Calling
This is knowing you were called or if you just feel like you should become a Pastor. You need to know that becoming a Pastor requires dedication, faith and preparation. You should also seek guidance from spiritual mentors, family, friends and even speak with your church Pastor or church elders. Many Pastors recall a specific moment or experience when they felt a divine calling to serve.
Obtain a Strong Biblical and Theological Foundation
Formal education is not required but it would enhance your ability as a Pastor such as a better ability to teach, preach and lead a congregation.
- Attend Bible colleges or complete ministerial training programs offered by their denomination.
- Earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology, Divinity, or Religious Studies.
- Pursue a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) at a seminary or theological institution.

Gain Ministry Experience
Hands on leadership experience such as volunteering in church leadership roles such as leading bible studies, prayer group and youth ministries. You can also ask your Pastor or Church leader if you can give a sermon on a topic of your choice.
Get Ordained or Licensed
There are three parts to becoming ordained or licenced and that is completing formal theological (Bible) education. Undergoing an assessment or interview by Church elders or leaders. Participate in an ordination ceremony where hands are laid upon you and are then formally recognised as a pastor.

Develop Key Pastoral Skills
As a Pastor you will need to be confident in what you are talking about, you will need to be good Public Speaking as you will be preaching to the whole congregation every Sunday. Leadership helping guide Church members, staff and volunteers. Counselloring offering support to those who need support for any reason. You will need to be good at conflict resolution where you help manage disagreements within the congregation with wisdom and patience. Administration, you will need to manage Church operations, finances and programs effectively.
Find a Church to Serve
You need to decide if you are going to look and ask if any existing Churches are needing a/ another Paster at their church or if you are going to need to look further. You might instead feel compelled to start a new Church. However you may feel like you want to work with someone else in the position as well.

Continue Growing Spiritually and Professionally
Ministry is a lifelong journey of learning and growth. To keep on being effective Engage in continuous theological studies and professional development. Look to mentorship and accountability from other experienced Pastors. Attend Pastoral conferences and workshops to stay up to date with best practices in ministry. Maintain a strong personal spiritual life through Bible study, prayer and self care.
