Open Bible in warm morning light representing Ephesians 2:8-9 and salvation by grace through faith.
Salvation is God’s gift, given by grace and received through faith.

Saved by Grace, Not by Works

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast.”
— Ephesians 2:8–9, WEB

Explanation of Ephesians 2:8–9

Ephesians 2:8–9 reminds us that salvation is not something we earn by being good enough, religious enough, or strong enough. It is a gift from God.

Paul makes it clear that we are saved by grace. Grace means God’s undeserved kindness and mercy toward us. We do not receive salvation because we have worked hard enough to deserve it, but because God lovingly offers it through Jesus Christ.

The verse also says we are saved through faith. Faith is trusting in what God has done, rather than trusting in ourselves. Our good works matter, but they are not the foundation of our salvation. They are the result of a life changed by God.

This truth removes pride from the heart. No one can boast before God and say, “I saved myself.” Instead, every believer can say, “God saved me by His grace.”

Reflection

Sometimes we can fall into the trap of thinking we need to prove ourselves to God. We may feel that we have to earn His love, earn His forgiveness, or earn our place with Him. But Ephesians 2:8–9 points us back to the beauty of the gospel: salvation is a gift.

God’s grace does not make us lazy. It makes us thankful. When we understand that we have been saved by grace, our obedience becomes an act of love rather than an attempt to earn acceptance.

Today, rest in this truth: you are not saved by your performance. You are saved by God’s grace through faith.

Short Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of salvation. Help me to stop relying on my own works and to trust fully in Your grace. Teach me to live with a humble and thankful heart, knowing that everything good comes from You. Amen.
